My Secret for Successful New Year’s Resolutions

Have you ever made a New Year’s resolution? If so, what happened to it as the year went by? Did it begin to fade into the distance and become a faint desire, hope, or dream? Been there, done that and so have millions of other Americans. Get this…. in 2013, 45% of Americans made New Year’s resolutions and only about 8% of people actually achieved their goals. And sadly, 25% of people didn’t even make it past the first week. Why does this happen? Why do we desperately want a resolution to become our reality yet we aren’t able to pull it off? Because goals and resolutions are missing the most important ingredient…

Clarity on how we want to feel within ourselves.

We go after resolutions and goals because we are driven by an innate desire to feel a certain way. Have you ever resolved that this would be the year for a full-fledge gym membership and healthy diet to knock off those pesky 10 pounds? Think back to how you felt when you set that goal. What feeling were you after with the loss of those pounds? Possibly, you desired to feel more energized and able-bodied. So you visited your local gym, bought a year membership, and purchased a no-fun-foods-allowed cookbook. But after a few weeks the excitement wore off and your cookbook sat on the shelf collecting dust along with your gym membership card. Perhaps the gym and healthy diet did not make you feel energized or able-bodied but instead provided you with feelings of anxiety, embarrassment, and dissatisfaction. And then maybe these feelings led you to believe that you can’t get the weight off, that you don’t have what it takes to make it happen, and that you will always be overweight.

Let’s look at this from another angle:

What does make you feel energized and able-bodied? Perhaps, these feelings are experienced when you are gardening, walking your dog, or canoeing on a sunny day. And (drum roll please) when you do these things the by-product is a smaller waistline and healthier cravings.

So here’s where it gets really juicy…

Rather than setting a goal to lose weight, how about setting the intention to feel energized and able-bodied? And then do the things in your life that make you feel that way.

What if this year you got really clear on how you actually want to feel within and then designed your resolutions, goals, and to-do lists?

Here’s your chance to do just that!
